Hancock County Health Services/Hancock County Memorial Hospital
Hancock County Memorial Hospital/Hancock County Health Services is a county owned, tax-supported health services facility. The organization, governed by its Board of Trustees, also has a management services contract and a Physician/Hospital Organization (Hancock County Health Services) contract with Mercy Health Network—North Iowa of Mason City, Iowa. The 25-bed critical access hospital is located in Britt, Iowa. Primary care clinics are located in: Britt, Garner, Kanawha, and Wesley, Iowa, to provide high quality care in a rural setting.
Hancock County Memorial Hospital was opened in 1953. The Hill-Burton Act, passed by Congress to assist communities in building hospitals, made the hospital possible. In 1974, a new outpatient wing was built on the southeast end of the hospital, and in 1981, remodeling to the patient care areas was accomplished. In March 1984, a new clinic building was added to the east end of the building to accommodate six physician office suites.
A major fund drive for an expansion and renovation of the main facility was completed in 1997. The $3.9 million project added another 28,000 square feet to the hospital and many major improvements. The improved facility brought a new dimension to the services provided to the county and the surrounding service area.
A fund drive initiated in 2001 by the Hancock County Memorial Hospital Foundation, remodeled and updated the present nurse’s station and patient care beds on the second floor of the hospital, including the outdated HVAC system.
HCMH is continuously looking for opportunities to create an environment that is more comfortable and convenient for those seeking care, and at the same time better equipped for those providing care, giving the residents of Hancock County a facility that will provide the best possible care for the future.
The HCMH Board of Trustees has approved a three phase renovation plan that will update and enhance services provided in the Emergency Department, the Britt Medical Clinic and the hospital maintenance area. These renovations are scheduled to begin Summer/Fall 2007. Once construction begins, total time to completion of this three phase project has been estimated anywhere from 12 to 18 months.
